Waste management

Waste management in the unincorporated areas of South Australia, the outback, is a costly and complex matter.  The cost of transferring to metro sites is a high impost on any small community.  Outback refuse dumps are almost exclusively owned and operated by the local community it services. Management and operation fees are met by the community and in some instances, with financial assistance from the OCA.

Use of refuse dumps in the outback is restricted to local community use to ensure the maximum life of the site can be achieved.  The travelling public and contractors working nearby or in the area are asked to make alternative arrangements for the disposal of waste when visiting or working in the outback.
